Better To Be Horses

Description:
A true story.

Published in Mimesis #2, 2007.
Better To Be Horses

She pretends to be horses. Not one,
but a herd hurtling breakneck
past homes where other children sleep.
Better to be horses
than flattened under sheets,

run until her body breaks
to Mustang, Arabian, Pinto,
tails pluming as they stream
through the dark. Hooves flash

on pavement, thundering,
proof  against silhouette  and silence,
fly forward, straining to be free of earth,
until she comes to the edge of the world
and the horses, panting,
drop their heads

to catch their breath
before the long walk home.

I like the imagery that her imagination produces.

nice..reminds me of my Daughter Aubyn, who loves to pretend to be a horse....and of not wanting to sleep"flattened under sheets"

"...until she comes to the edge of the world "...such a good place to come to before walking home

There was such freedom in that imagining, as a child.

Thanks for your comment, it made me smile.
