Rejoice, for beruthiel is now our traditional gallery moderator
Apr 23, 2008, 10:39:41
Also, it'll now be fairly easy to post code snippets and similar on Storm. Read why.

We've wanted [beruthiel] on staff for a while now, but first she was underage (we don't hire anyone who isn't at least 18) and then she was too busy. We've finally snared her, so she is the new moderator for our traditional gallery.

Also, I added a new feature a while ago and forgot to announce it. If you've ever wanted to post code snippets or similar on Storm, you'll know the frustration of having that code eaten by our parser. Now there is a fairly easy way to deal with that - I have added code to allow the <!> tag. Insert this inside a tag or other parseable syntax that you want displayed rather than interpreted. To clarify: This goes inside the actual tag, not between tags or around the outside.

For instance, let's say you wanted to display <b>bold text</b> rather than bold text. Enter <<!>b>bold text<<!>/b>, and it will display as <b>bold text</b>.

The <!> tag (HTML's empty comment tag) works here by disrupting the parser, basically. [epochwolf] tweaked my code substantially to make things work more neatly behind the scenes, but this is still how it works in principle.

Edit:
FAQ 52: How do I keep code from parsing?
Report
Pssst... Now is the time, all of you traditional artists, to tell me if there's anything in particular you'd like to see happen.

...Any takers?
Report

Please miss [beruthiel] can we have some more gruel?
Report
Pffft. Nah, but I'll let you eat cake.

Report
Cake's a LIE! XD
Report
!

You realise I'll be forced to exterminate you, now you've given away the secret?
Report
Yes but, I'll find a way to escape the glass cubicle you put me in by thinking with portals!
Report
Oshite. Unless you plan on warming up some neurotoxin?!
Report
. . . *clings her companion-cube with fear!*
Report
Yep, I want the world to worship me. Can you make that happen? Er%u2026 hehe.. I can%u2019t think of anything important right now, but if I do it%u2019s good to know who I can turn to you with it.

Congrats on the new job
Report
Oh snap... I meant to say "that I can turn to you with it.."
Report
I dunno, Segundus... worship sounds like the kind of thing you could get sick of, pretty fast.

(Thankyou! )
Report
You took hardly any time at all to get sick of it, for instance
Report
*Snort of laughter*... oh, give over!
Report
Hehe.. Yeah I guess
Report
Goodness gracious. :/
Report

Also, you could probably add the code-relevant FAQ entries to this.
Report
Y'know, that'd kinda make sense...
Report
Done. More gasping?

Report
Only in the correct situation.
Report
Traditional photography or traditional everything?
Report

Traditional as in things like charcoal, paint, pencil work, anything done in traditional media.
Report
Traditional photography is done with traditional media. You cannot out rule it as an art form. It's just as much an art as drawing/painting, writing or music.
Report
Ah, we're not ruling it out, at all - we just categorise traditional photography separately from things like charcoal drawings or oil paintings.

You'll notice we have a large section for photography - we just haven't drawn a line between the categories of digital/traditional photography. Still, we do have specialist categories for each type (check out "Photography > Dark room", for a start).

Come to think of it, I haven't seen terribly many traditional photographers submitting their work, recently... if that's your favourite medium, it'd be awesome to see some of your photos.
Report
Oh okay. I was just making sure. (:

Hm.. well traditional and dark room are similar so I see no need to add in 'traditional.'

It is indeed my favorite medium. I'm working on processing the photos into digital files. It's lengthy, but it's coming about. I'll have some photos up by next week or so. (:
Report
Yeah, I can see where the misunderstanding arose.

Oooh, brilliant. I'll keep an eye out.
Report

I didn't rule it out as an art form, Traditional art is generally accepting as painting or drawing in physical media, photography goes under photography since it's an art form in it's own right.
Report
I know. (: I just needed some clarity.
Report
Not the photography, no... I'd be *really* far out of my depth with that. But if you've drawn or painted it with wet/dry media (as opposed to digital), I'm supposed to look after it.
Report
Ah.

Is there a traditional photography gallery moderator?
Report
Well, for a while we had [valys] as Photography mod (in general), but she's moved to Literature. So no, we haven't even got any sort of photography mod at the moment. But [mirrin] is the Head Gallery mod, so he oversees *all* the different galleries. All the mediums are still being looked after - it's just that not each has its own moderator.

It has a lot to do with the size of Storm, really. We're not all that big, yet. I imagine it will come with time, though.
Report
Mhm. Storm is small now-- but it seems to be growing quite a bit.

It'd be neat to see this category in the future.
Report
Yes, here's hoping.

Keep raising the suggestion, I guess...
Report
I will!
Report
Congrats to Beruthiel!
Report
Oh, Patty, that's an ugly, ugly hack *shakes head sadly*

You should know better!
Report

We're planning to implement a <code> tag, but this is at least better than the <i></i> hack that I remember using on dA (and which was the best option here also, incidentally).

Also, it appears that this hack doesn't work in comment preview. That is a very bad thing...
Report
I applaud your new position.
Report
I'll do my best...
Report
I know you will,
Never have doubted,
Report
Good luck to you Beru
And good decision Storm higher ups
Report
Unanimous decision, and a very enthusiastic one
Report
